Spain

Community

Area 492,592 square kilometres (mainland Spain).506,030 square kilometres (land area 499,600 square kilometres) including the Balearic and Canary Islands, and the North African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. In 2017 the regional government of Catalonia, Spains wealthiest region, held a contentious referendum on independence that was declared illegal by the central government in Madrid; furthermore the potential new State failed to win the backing of the EU, or any other country. Boycotted by most anti-independence voters, the referendum produced a huge majority for independence but on a minority turnout. The controversy is ongoing, end-2017.
