Cape Town was founded in 1652 by Johan van Riebeek, of the Dutch East India Company.Until the Suez Canal opened, Cape Town was important as the last stop for ships to re-provision on the voyage from Europe to the East Indies.Replenishing the ships stores with fruit grown in the Cape Town area was vital to prevent scurvy amongst the crew.

Durban was founded in 1824 as Port Natal, it was renamed in 1835 after Benjamin DUrban, Governor of the Eastern District of Cape Colony.

Johannesburg was founded in 1886, to serve the gold mines in the area.It was named after Johannes Meyer, the first mining commissioner.

Port Elizabeth was founded in 1820 by British settlers, the settlement was named after the wife of the lieutenant-general of the Cape Province.Wool and fruit were the main exports; the port was considerably improved in 1928.

Tshwane (Pretoria) was laid out in 1855, and named after Pretorius, first President of South Africa. It replaced Potchefstroom as capital in 1863.
