1Callao was founded by the Spanish in 1537; it is now a major Pacific port.It suffered a devastating earthquake in 1746.

2Lima was founded in 1535 by the Spaniard Francisco Pizarro.It was one of the last Spanish strongholds to fall to the South American nationalists when Peru gained independence.
