3Karachi, was occupied by Britain in 1843; it was a small fishing village in the 1700s but grew as trade moved there from the decaying port of Kharak Bandar. A British-built railway along the Indus Valley also boosted the economy of the city. Karachi was the capital of Pakistan from its creation in 1947 until 1962, when the new city of Islamabad was made the capital.
4Rawalpindi Grew rapidly after the British established a garrison here in 1849.
