Famine and poverty afflicted Malta ca. 1580-90. In 1667, 11,000 Maltese died of the Plague. Between 1798 and 1800, when Malta was occupied by Napoleonic France and under attack by Britain, famine and emigration reduced the population to an estimated 80,000. 1Valetta is named after Jean de la Valette, Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, who successfully defended the city against a much larger ottoman Turkish force in 1565. Before this date the peninsula upon which Valetta stands was known as Xaghret Mewwija or Sheb er-ras.
