Language, %. Official; Kirghiz and Russian
After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Kirghiz was the sole official language; Russian was official only in provinces where Russians were in a majority.� However in 2000 the Kirghiz Parliament voted to make Russian the co-official language in the whole country, to halt the emigration of skilled Russians.
