Religion / Ethnicity, %

The denomination Jewish can signify either ethnicity or religion; in Israel the two categories are almost identical, in contrast with secularised countries where many Jews are non-practising. Jewish immigration to Palestine was slow through the 1920s when the country was under British mandate, because of limited economic opportunities there. In 1927 there was actually net Jewish emigration from Palestine. Figures pre-1948 refer to the current (2017) area of Israel/Palestine.

1A new deep-water port opened at Ashdod in 1965.This superseded the port of Tel Aviv.

2Jerusalem was proclaimed the capital by the Israeli Knesset, 1950; in the 1967 War the eastern portion of the city came under Israeli control.East Jerusalem continues to be claimed by the Palestinians (see Palestinian Territories) as the capital of their State. The United Nations, and most individual States, continue to recognise only Tel Aviv as the Israeli capital; however in 2018 President Donald Trump of the USA recognised Jerusalem as Israels capital, and moved the US Embassy there from Tel Aviv.Pre-1967 Jerusalem has a municipal area of 37.5 square kilometres; post 1967, this increased to 107 square kilometres.

3Jewish settlers had established a community at Tel Aviv / Jaffa as early as 1881, and further Jewish housing development was carried out in 1909.Jaffa was captured by Israeli forces in 1948 and its Arab population fled.It was united with Tel Aviv in 1950.Tel Aviv was founded as a modern city in 1909 on what were sand dunes.Ashdod, 30 kilometres to the south, is the main port.
