1Founded in 1200, Tehran was made the capital of Persia in 1788.
2Population of Shiraz reduced in the early 1800s due to three earthquakes in 1812, 1824 and 1853.
3Abadan was virtually abandoned during the Iran-Iraq
war, 1980-86. In 1986 just 6 people were recorded as living there.
