2Population of Shiraz reduced in the early 1800s due to three earthquakes in 1812, 1824 and 1853.

Physical communications � roads and railways, First railway in Iran opened 1888, short horse-drawn line south of Tehran to the shrine of Shah Abdul Azim; later converted to steam, closed 1952. First mainline railway in Iran opened 1917. A rail link to Turkmenistan opened in 1996.
