1Guayaquil was founded in 1537 by the Spanish explorer, Francisco del Orelana;

2Quito was an Inca city, named after the Quitu Indians. In 1822 it became the capital of the Dipartimento del Sud of the newly independent Gran Colombia; in 1831 it became capital of the new State of Ecuador.
