1Santo Domingo (Ciudad Trujillo) was founded by Bartholomeu, brother of Christopher Columbus, in 1496, Santo Domingo claims to be the oldest continuously-inhabited European settlement in the Americas.� Under the dictatorial rule of Rafael Trujillo Molina, Santo Domingo was renamed Ciudad Trujillo (Trujillo City).
