1Abidjan was built on the shores of a lagoon, as a terminal for the Niger railway from Niamey.in 1950 a canal was constructed enabling ocean-going ships to reach Abidjan directly.

2Yamoussoukro replaced Abidjan as the official political capital in 1983.However commerce and administration are still centred in Abidjan, where most countries still have their embassies.
