1Buenos Aires was founded in 1535 by Pedro de Mendoza; its name means good air, because the citys patron saint was the Virgin Mary, patron of sailors, who needed good winds for sailing.. It was abandoned in 1541 due to Indian attacks. The Spanish evacuated Buenos Aires, turning their horses loose to breed on the humid Pampas grasslands. Buenos Aires was re-founded in 1580 by Juan de Garay but the Spanish did not promote the growth of Buenos Aires, preferring to control their huge colonial South American empire from Peru. Only after Argentinean independence did Buenos Aires become a major city, and was designated the capital of Argentina in 1880.
2Cordoba was founded in 1573 by Jeronimo Luis de Cabrera, and named after Cordoba, Spain. The railway came here in 1870.
3La Plata was founded in 1882.
4Mendoza was founded in 1561.
5Rosario was founded in 1793; and developed rapidly
after the railways arrived, facilitating the growth of agricultural exports
from its docks.
